Reusing Electronics for Sustainability

Reuse is giving the products a second life before they become waste. This might involve reusing the product as-is, or reuse with modification, such as refurbishing. It should be distinguished from recycling, which is the breaking down of used items to make raw materials.

Like other waste streams, reuse, donation and repair are common sustainable ways to dispose of information technology (IT) waste. Reusing electronics is an alternative option to recycling because it extends the lifespan of a device. Devices still need eventual recycling, but by allowing others to purchase used electronics, recycling can be postponed and value gained from device use. In the recycling process, TVs, monitors, mobile phones and computers are typically tested for reuse and repaired. If broken, they may be disassembled for parts.

Reusing products, and therefore extending the use of that item beyond the point where it is discarded by its first user is preferable to recycling or disposal, as this is the least energy intensive solution, although it is often overlooked. By selling or donating electronic gadgets, rather than disposing of them, electronic waste footprint can be reduced.
